40th Anniversary Celebration (2019)
In July 2019, Immanuel Lutheran School commemorated its 40th anniversary with a vibrant three-day celebration. The event featured cultural and musical performances, including student singsing groups, gospel bands, and brass band displays. Notably, comedian Elton Kili and singer Armstrong Gomara (Dadiigii) graced the occasion, adding to the festive atmosphere. Traditional groups from Morobe and other provinces also participated, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. Principal Yatu Idauman expressed gratitude to all supporters, including Prima Small Goods, for their assistance in making the event a success. The celebration not only marked a significant milestone but also served as a fundraising initiative to support the school's infrastructure development and acquisition of necessary materials and equipment.
Recognizing the need for practical skills development, Immanuel Lutheran School announced plans in 2023 to establish a vocational training centre. With a generous funding of K100,000 from the Lae City Authority, the centre aims to equip students with hands-on skills in various trades, enhancing their employability and contribution to society. Principal Yatu Idauman highlighted the importance of this initiative, especially in light of the school's limited infrastructure improvements over the years. He also called upon the government and education authorities to address pay issues faced by teachers, some of whom have been working without regular salaries.
In a significant boost to the school's infrastructure, the Lae City Authority, under the leadership of Lae MP John Rosso, provided funding support to Immanuel Lutheran School. The school received K100,000 to support various projects and administrative needs. One notable development is the construction of a brand new eight-in-one double classroom, which will significantly increase the school's enrollment capacity from 100 to 800 students. This expansion addresses the pressing need for more classroom space and is a testament to the collaborative efforts between the school and local authorities.
🤝 Student-Led Peace Initiative (2012)
In a remarkable display of leadership and commitment to peace, students at Immanuel Lutheran School signed an agreement in October 2012 to end inter-school fights, a prevalent issue in Lae at the time. The ceremony, witnessed by over 500 students, parents, teachers, community leaders, and church representatives, emphasized the school's dedication to promoting harmony and unity. The initiative was further symbolized by the planting of seedlings, marking a new beginning and a commitment to a peaceful future.
🌟 Leadership Spotlight: Principal Yatu Idauman
At the helm of Immanuel Lutheran School's transformative journey is Principal Yatu Idauman, whose visionary leadership has been instrumental in steering the institution towards growth and excellence. Under his guidance, the school has not only celebrated significant milestones but has also initiated projects that address both academic and infrastructural needs.
Principal Idauman's commitment to providing second-chance education through the Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE) program has opened doors for many students who had previously dropped out after Grade 8 or 10. His advocacy for teacher welfare, especially concerning salary issues, underscores his dedication to creating a supportive environment for both staff and students.
Moreover, his efforts in fostering community engagement, as seen in the 2012 peace initiative and the 2019 anniversary celebrations, highlight his holistic approach to education—one that values academic achievement, moral development, and societal harmony.
